Futureman Goes to the 80s

For this short comedy I borrowed another actor from the Free Box, Jeremy Benjamin, and a couple of my friends from the Forgery theater group, Sarah Dyrhaug and Paul Susi. They did a great job with the script and I made them do way too many takes, so I give them a big thanks for persevering. Also a big thank you to Brent Norton for the Nintendo footage.

I used an Elliott Smith song in the movie.. I think this is fair use copyright-wise under the category of commentary. Unlike the characters in my movie, I actually like Elliott’s music, btw.

This is my second WOE movie and I think it turned out pretty well. Teresa and Drew did an awesome job of acting, especially when it came to keeping in the same positions between takes. I shot this with one camera, so all those different angles you see are different takes. I was surprised how seamlessly I was able to edit most of the footage together.

I got to use my new used Lowel lighting kit for the first time.. think lighting turned out pretty well, though if I were to do it again I think I would try to get less ambient light in the room and use light from the giant TV that was offscreen to help light from the front. Jacob also did great job on sound with the new boom pole.

You should check out Drew’s other work in the Free Box.. it’s a weekly sitcom-style comedy series that is really funny. And it looks like Teresa stars in the pilot for the series Campus Daze.

This was my easiest script to shoot, so I figured I would pick this one to start with to give my equipment a test run. Special thanks to Dick McMahon who recorded narration way out in Coos Bay and Iretsu for use of their song.

BIY Stage Visuals

I’ve been working on some visual elements for Bombs Into You’s stage show.. the idea is that we would project some video on/behind us as we play and have a different video sequence for each song. We haven’t figured out how to sync up the video with our backing electronic tracks yet, but I at least wanted to get a start on the video part of it.

I put all these together in After Effects. It’s actually a good way to help me learn how to use the program since I’m basically just toying around with effects and bits of footage.

I filmed the bug on a cruise ship going down the coast of Mexico. The thermometer is from the front of my house and the blinky lettering was warning of road construction down the street from me. The fence and wires footage comes from a substation also near my house.

BIY Music Video Experimentation

I am starting to experiment with ideas for music videos for my band Bombs Into You. I shot this footage in my basement and then played with it in After Effects and Premiere. I was thinking of using some of the effects for our new track My Machine along with a story sequence.

Before producing that FLV version I rendered out an mp4 version and the results were.. twitchy. I don’t know why or how Premiere rendered it like that, but I really like the effect!

My band is working on a new EP that will come out before the end of the year. I’m hoping to have a music video or two for us done sometime around then. I’ll keep you posted.
